Academic Calendar

English, Ph.D.

Degree Requirements

The first year of full-time Ph.D. study will normally include 18 credit hours, at least 12 credit hours of which should be graduate seminars in English literature. This program of studies will be arranged in consultation with the student’s advisory committee at a meeting that will take place no later than one week before the start of classes.

Two candidacy examinations - the Period Examination and the Special Area Examination - each consist of a four-hour written component and a one-hour oral component. For additional details, consult the English, Theatre, Film & Media supplementary regulations.

Second Language Reading Requirement: Doctoral students are required to have some knowledge of a language other than English. For a Ph.D. degree, a grade of C+ or better in 6 undergraduate credit hours of language courses satisfies the requirement. Students who have a reading knowledge of a second language but who have not taken a university-level course in it may satisfy the requirement by demonstrating competence in that language, which in most cases, will be done by taking a reading test. For additional details, consult the English, Theatre, Film & Media supplementary regulations.
